ckt lamps
Printed circuit boards normally live hidden inside a box of electronics, as functional guts rather than visual designs. As a construction material however, PCBs have a few interesting features. They are made of fiberglass, so they’re actually very sturdy. The color of the board can vary from a translucent amber, to bright greens, reds, etc. On top of that, they’re optimized to receive graphic designs etched in copper, a semi-precious metal. So why should we refrain from using PCB as an exterior surface?
In this spirit, I’m designing a series of table lamps constructed from PCB material. The two-sided variety is especially interesting because graphics on the inside layer can be invisible until the lamp is switched on; these inside designs appear as a silhouette behind the surface of the lamp.
